Selection Committee

When selection criteria are vague or unpublished, every pick is contested as nepotism or bias. A player who finishes 5th in national ranking but is left off the team will demand to know why, and 'committee discretion' is not a defensible answer in 2026.

Without weighted, published criteria, selectors are exposed personally to public criticism, federations face appeals and lawsuits, and the next generation of players cannot understand what they need to do to be selected.

Selection Criteria Engine encodes the federation's published weighting — ranking points, recent tournament form, head-to-head against rivals, coach assessment — and produces a candidate ordering with each component visible. Selectors can override but the override is logged with reasoning.

The published criteria document and the actual selection map to each other transparently, defusing most grievances before they start.

Selection meetings today open with selectors comparing memories — 'Wasn't she injured at the autumn championship?', 'Didn't he lose to that Italian last month?'. Half the meeting is establishing facts that should be on screen.

Coach assessments exist as informal notes; performance trends are guessed rather than computed. Decisions made on partial recall produce inconsistent rationale and undermine confidence in the committee.

When defending picks publicly, selectors cannot show the evidence base because there isn't one.

Player Rankings and Performance Data feed the consolidated profile — last 24 months of results across categories, ranking trajectory, head-to-head against likely opponents, injury and availability status from the Player Database, and structured coach assessments captured through Squad Management. The committee starts every discussion from one shared, current record, and meeting time shifts from fact-finding to judgement.

Today many federations announce selections publicly before notifying non-selected players, who learn from the federation website that their teammates made it and they did not. Others notify by group email with no individual reasoning.

Both approaches breed bitterness — non-selection is painful enough without being humiliated by it. Selectors then receive angry letters and social media attacks, and the next selection cycle starts with damaged trust on both sides.
