Selection is the most politically sensitive act a national coach performs. Every non-selected player has a regional comite and a network of supporters who will question the decision.

Without transparent criteria backed by data, the coach burns trust with each cycle and makes themselves vulnerable to second-guessing. Defensibility is also a matter of fairness: players deserve to understand why they were or were not selected, and what they need to do differently.
