Payment Processors

Handle tournament fees, marketplace transactions, license payments.

At a glance

Payment processors handle the financial spine of the platform — tournament fees, license payments, marketplace transactions, sponsor settlements — across dozens of currencies. Petanque Life integrates Stripe Connect with fraud signals, dispute evidence, and compliant payout routing so processors operate cleanly at federation scale.

Motivation

Transaction fees, volume growth.

Context

Payments in pétanque span a wide range of risk and value profiles: a five-euro junior license, a 200-euro tournament entry, a 50 000-euro sponsor settlement, a 20-euro merchandise sale. Each transaction lives inside a regulatory framework — PSD2 in Europe, national gambling and sports-finance rules, anti-money-laundering directives — and must be auditable for years.

Federations are not financial institutions and cannot be expected to manage processor relationships directly, so the platform's job is to wrap Stripe Connect (or equivalent) in a domain-aware layer that surfaces fraud signals, packages dispute evidence, and routes payouts to the correct legal entity per nation. Processors win when the platform feeds them clean data; they lose money — and credibility — when the platform leaves them to reconstruct context after a chargeback.

Needs in depth

1

Built-in fraud signals — device fingerprints, velocity checks, and federation-verified identities — that reduce risk on tournament and license payments

Why it matters

Sports payments attract specific fraud patterns: stolen-card testing on low-value license payments, account takeovers that re-route tournament payouts, and registration spam tied to bonus-collection schemes. Out-of-the-box processor fraud rules catch generic patterns but miss domain-specific signals entirely.

Federation-verified identities, license-status checks, device fingerprints across user sessions, and velocity checks per event are uniquely available to the platform and dramatically improve fraud catch-rates without raising false-positive friction on legitimate players paying small license fees in legitimate windows.

How Petanque Life serves it

Every payment carries enriched signals: federation-verified license ID, device fingerprint, session velocity, account age, and event-context metadata. These signals flow to Stripe Radar (or equivalent) as custom rules and surface in the processor's risk dashboard with full context.

Suspicious patterns trigger configurable holds while the federation reviews them in their operations console.

2

A clean dispute and chargeback flow with evidence packets auto-assembled from booking, license, and event records

Why it matters

Disputes consume processor margin disproportionately when evidence assembly is manual. A federation hit with a chargeback on a tournament entry must dig through emails, screenshots, and registration logs to defend it — and most don't, surrendering legitimate revenue.

An auto-assembled evidence packet with the player's confirmation, the event's published rules, attendance records, and signed terms turns dispute defense from a dreaded chore into an automated submission with high win rates. Both processor and federation come out ahead.

How Petanque Life serves it

When a dispute fires, the platform auto-assembles an evidence packet: payment record, registration confirmation with timestamp, event rules and refund policy, attendance or no-show evidence, communication logs, and signed terms acceptance. The packet submits directly to the processor's dispute API with no manual federation step required for standard cases, leaving operations staff free to focus on the genuinely contested edge cases.

3

Multi-currency support through Stripe Connect with proper FX handling, local payment methods, and compliant payout routing across nations

Why it matters

A platform serving FIPJP-member nations operates across more than 40 currencies and dozens of regulatory regimes. A French federation receives euros to a French bank under PSD2; a Madagascan federation needs MGA payouts under different banking rules; a Japanese club takes JPY through Konbini.

Forcing every federation through a single currency or routing pattern either excludes nations or creates compliance gaps. Native multi-currency through Stripe Connect with local payment methods, FX transparency, and compliant payout routing is the only viable architecture for a global sport.

How Petanque Life serves it

Stripe Connect powers multi-currency settlement with localized payment methods (SEPA, Bancontact, iDEAL, Konbini, local card networks), transparent FX rates surfaced at checkout, and per-tenant payout routing to the federation's legal entity in its banking jurisdiction. KYC and tax forms collect once per federation, with automatic refresh on regulatory changes and reminder workflows for expiring documents.

In practice

A junior player in Belgium registers for a regional tournament through her club's portal, paying a 12-euro fee via Bancontact. The payment carries her federation-verified license ID, device fingerprint, and event metadata to Stripe — Radar sees the enriched signals, scores the transaction at low risk, and approves in under a second. Three weeks later her parent disputes the charge, claiming the registration was unauthorized.

The platform's dispute flow fires: an evidence packet auto-assembles with the registration confirmation, the federation's published refund policy, the player's attendance log from the event check-in, and the parent's prior consent acceptance. The packet submits to Stripe within minutes; the dispute is found in the federation's favour without a single manual step. Meanwhile, Stripe Connect routes the federation's monthly payout — aggregated across thousands of small transactions — to the correct Belgian banking entity in euros, with FX-handled cross-border refunds where applicable, and full audit logging satisfies the federation's annual financial review.

What success looks like

  • Payment authorization p95 latency <800 ms end-to-end
  • Dispute win rate ≥75% with auto-assembled evidence packets
  • Multi-currency payout settlement accuracy 100% reconciled monthly
  • Fraud false-positive rate <0.5% on legitimate license and tournament payments
  • PSD2 SCA compliance 100% on European card transactions
